Keen perception ... emotional depth ... technical excellence. These qualities are the hallmarks that set Joan Powers' photographs apart. She brings a deep understanding of human nature to her work, producing photographs that reflect the realities that fill the lives of the people and the places she captures on film.
Throughout her career in professional photography, which spans more than three decades, Ms. Powers has been the recipient of many awards for excellence and has had her photographs presented in countless one-person and group exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Her work has been published in Time, Newsweek, Attenzione Magazine, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.
As a teacher of photography, Ms. Powers was honored with the David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching , awarded to her by C. W. Post, Long Island University. She is Director of the photography program at the university, where she has been a professor since 1978. She also has done numerous photographic workshops, primarily in Italy.
Ms. Powers holds an M.F.A. degree from the City University of New York. She is also a member of several professional groups including the American Society of Media Photographers, Professional Women Photographers, and the Society for Photographic Education.
